Join Halfords and help shape the future of motoring and cycling.
At Halfords, our purpose is simple: to inspire and support a lifetime of motoring and cycling. As a leading specialist retailer, we combine customer-led innovation with a distinctive product and service offering to create seamless, convenient experiences for our customers—from e-bike and electric vehicle servicing to flexible, on-demand support.
Our Support Centre teams are central to everything we do. They work across every part of the business, bringing expertise, collaboration, and momentum to our continued success. If you thrive in a fast-moving environment and enjoy making a meaningful impact, you’ll feel right at home here.
About the Opportunity
We are looking for a Group Tax Manager to join our collaborative and high-performing tax team within a large listed retail and services group. This is a hands-on and varied role that offers exposure across both Direct Tax and Indirect Tax, making it an excellent opportunity for someone seeking their first move into industry or an in-house tax professional looking to broaden their expertise.
Working closely with the Senior Direct Tax Manager and Senior Indirect Tax Manager, you will support a broad range of tax compliance, reporting, and advisory activities. You’ll also play a key role in developing processes, supporting projects, and helping the team respond effectively to legislative and business change.
This role offers genuine variety, responsibility, and development. Over time, the mix of direct and indirect tax work can evolve based on your experience and strengths, allowing you to build wider technical capability while gaining confidence and ownership in key areas.
What You’ll Be Doing
As Group Tax Manager, you’ll contribute across core tax operations while also supporting strategic and improvement-focused initiatives across the wider business.
Key responsibilities include:
Supporting the review and submission of UK and overseas corporation tax returns in partnership with the Senior Direct Tax Manager
Supporting the review and submission of UK and overseas VAT returns alongside the Senior Indirect Tax Manager
Assisting with tax accounting and disclosures for both group and entity reporting requirements
Ensuring accurate VAT accounting, including balance sheet reconciliations and maintaining process documentation within SAP
Supporting tax audits and helping prepare documentation required for SAO, BRR+, and CCO obligations
Maintaining transfer pricing documentation, including support for Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting
Providing practical tax support and advice on business queries, restructuring activity, and transformation projects
Contributing to new tax processes in response to evolving domestic and international legislation, including areas such as Pillar 2
Supporting VAT technology initiatives, including key platform projects
Building effective relationships with auditors, finance teams, legal colleagues, and other internal stakeholders
Monitoring and analysing tax data, KPIs, and performance measures to support reporting and filings
Driving continuous improvement through process optimisation, project support, and operational enhancements
Line managing a Tax Analyst, providing coaching, development, and day-to-day support
Why This Role Stands Out
This is more than a compliance-focused tax role. It is a chance to join a supportive in-house team during an exciting period of change and development, where you will be encouraged to learn, take ownership, and expand your career.
You’ll gain broad exposure across a complex international business, develop both your technical tax knowledge and commercial understanding, and build valuable leadership experience through managing and developing a junior team member.
About You
We’re looking for someone who combines strong technical grounding with curiosity, initiative, and a collaborative working style.
You’ll ideally bring:
A professional qualification such as ACA, ACCA, CTA, or equivalent
Experience in Direct Tax, Indirect Tax, or both
Strong technical knowledge in corporate tax, VAT, or a combination of the two
A willingness to continue developing across both tax disciplines
Experience in the preparation or review of tax returns, tax accounting, or VAT returns gained in either practice or industry
Familiarity with tax and finance systems such as SAP, OneSource, GVRT, or similar platforms
Confidence working with data, producing reports, and carrying out analysis to support tax reporting and compliance
Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing deadlines across both routine and project-based work
Clear communication skills and the confidence to work with a range of internal and external stakeholders
A proactive, self-motivated approach and a readiness to get involved in new areas
An interest in process improvement, automation, or tax technology—this would be a real advantage
The capability and enthusiasm to manage and develop a junior team member
Reward & Benefits
At Halfords, we recognise the importance of rewarding our colleagues fairly while supporting their growth and wellbeing.
What you can expect:
A competitive salary, benchmarked against market data

25 days’ annual leave, plus bank holidays
Enhanced family leave
Ongoing support for your personal and professional development
A hybrid working model, combining home working with time in our Support Centre
