R&D Tax Director

S&W is seeking a talented and ambitious R&D Tax Director to join its R&D and incentives practice as part of the senior leadership team. The role centres on managing a portfolio of complex R&D advisory and compliance engagements, acting as a trusted adviser to clients, and delivering high-quality consultancy on both technical tax matters and wider commercial issues. A key part of the position is developing and strengthening long-term client relationships while identifying opportunities to expand services across the client portfolio. The Director will also play an important leadership role within the team. Responsibilities include direct line management, setting objectives, carrying out appraisals, supporting performance management, and providing structured coaching and day-to-day development for colleagues. The role requires close collaboration with peers across the R&D team and other service lines to ensure a consistently strong client experience. Another major focus is practice growth. S&W expects the successful candidate to contribute actively to business development, profile-raising, and revenue generation at both local and national level. This includes using an established professional network to win new work, encouraging cross-referrals, and contributing to marketing, PR, and thought leadership activity that enhances the firm’s brand in the market. Candidates should be ACA and/or CTA qualified, with significant corporate and R&D tax experience gained in practice and/or industry. They should be technically strong, experienced in managing both clients and teams, and able to demonstrate commercial awareness, problem-solving ability, and a track record in business development.
