We are now looking for an experienced and commercially minded R&D Senior Manager to join our UK Innovation practice. This is a senior leadership role for someone who combines deep technical expertise in R&D tax relief and the UK Patent Box regime with strong client leadership, operational oversight, and people management capability.


The Opportunity

As R&D Senior Manager, you will play a central role in shaping and delivering high-quality advisory services to Ayming’s clients. You will lead complex engagements, oversee technical quality, support business growth, and act as a trusted adviser to both clients and internal stakeholders.

This role requires someone who can confidently navigate technical complexity, manage risk effectively, and provide clear strategic and commercial direction across a varied portfolio of clients, including large corporates.


What You’ll Be Responsible For

1. Technical Leadership

You will be a senior technical authority across R&D tax incentives and the UK Patent Box regime, ensuring advice is accurate, robust, and commercially effective.

  • Provide expert guidance on:

  • SME R&D tax relief

  • Large company schemes

  • RDEC

  • UK Patent Box

  • Lead the integration of Patent Box claims with broader R&D tax incentive work

  • Ensure all advice and claim outcomes are:

  • Compliant

  • Technically sound

  • Commercially valuable for clients

2. Senior Client Relationship Management

You will take ownership of key client relationships and act as a trusted senior adviser across complex and high-value engagements.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with senior client stakeholders

  • Lead the delivery of complex projects to a high standard

  • Ensure excellent levels of:

  • Client satisfaction

  • Retention

  • Repeat business

  • Provide strategic support that strengthens long-term partnerships

3. Complex Claims & Escalation Oversight

You will serve as the senior escalation point for technically challenging or high-risk claims, ensuring issues are managed with sound judgement and appropriate governance.

  • Act as the final escalation point on complex claims

  • Provide direction, technical review, and sign-off where required

  • Implement feedback loops to improve:

  • Quality

  • Learning

  • Knowledge sharing across the team

  • Support a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence

4. Team Leadership & Development

You will lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of senior consultants, creating an environment that encourages accountability, collaboration, and growth.

  • Line manage and mentor a team of approximately 5+ direct and indirect reports

  • Develop team capability through coaching and support

  • Foster a culture focused on:

5. Delivery, Resourcing & Profitability

You will oversee the effective delivery of client work across your portfolio, balancing quality, efficiency, and commercial performance.

  • Maintain oversight of:

  • Claim delivery

  • Team resourcing

  • Portfolio profitability

  • Ensure projects are delivered:

  • On time

  • Efficiently

  • In line with Ayming’s quality standards

  • Monitor workloads and allocation to support sustainable performance

6. Project & Stakeholder Management

You will manage projects end-to-end, coordinating across internal teams and stakeholders to ensure seamless execution and clear communication throughout the engagement lifecycle.

  • Oversee project planning and delivery from start to finish

  • Coordinate effectively with internal teams across the business

  • Ensure stakeholder communication remains clear, timely, and aligned

  • Resolve issues proactively to keep delivery on track

7. Business Development & Growth

You will contribute to the growth of the practice by identifying new opportunities, supporting proposals, and working closely with Sales and internal teams.

  • Spot opportunities within existing and prospective client relationships

  • Support the creation of proposals and client solutions

  • Partner with Sales to drive growth in:

  • R&D tax services

  • Patent Box advisory

  • Help expand Ayming’s market presence and service impact

8. Thought Leadership & Market Insight

You will stay at the forefront of legislative and market developments, helping to strengthen Ayming’s profile as a leader in innovation incentives.

  • Monitor changes in:

  • Tax legislation

  • HMRC guidance

  • Industry developments

  • Act as a subject matter expert internally and externally

  • Share insights that enhance technical capability and market visibility

  • Contribute to Ayming’s reputation and thought leadership in the sector

9. Quality, Risk & Governance

You will help ensure all work is delivered in line with internal governance standards, quality controls, and external compliance requirements.

  • Maintain compliance with:

  • Ayming quality procedures

  • HMRC requirements

  • Internal governance standards

  • Proactively identify and manage risk

  • Support robust and defensible claim delivery processes

10. Recruitment & Practice Development

You will also support the wider growth and scalability of the practice through people development and capability building.

  • Support recruitment activities and onboarding of new team members

  • Contribute to training and development initiatives

  • Help strengthen team capability and operational scalability

  • Play a role in shaping the future growth of the Innovation practice


What We’re Looking For

Education & Qualifications

We are looking for a strong academic and professional background, ideally aligned to the technical and commercial demands of the role.

  • Degree in a relevant field such as:

  • Science

  • Technology

  • Engineering

  • Mathematics

  • Finance

  • Accounting

  • Professional qualifications such as ATT or CTA are advantageous

  • Project management qualifications such as APM or PRINCE2 would also be beneficial

Experience

You will bring substantial experience in R&D tax, corporate taxation, or a closely related area, alongside a proven track record of leading teams and managing complex client engagements.

  • Significant experience in:

  • R&D tax

  • Corporate taxation

  • Or a related advisory field

  • At least 4+ years in a managerial role

  • Essential experience working with or dealing closely with HMRC

  • Proven expertise advising on both:

  • R&D tax reliefs

  • UK Patent Box

  • Background in a professional services environment

  • Strong experience managing:

  • Complex client engagements

  • Senior stakeholders

  • Consultant or senior consultant teams

Skills & Capabilities

You will be technically strong, commercially aware, and confident leading both clients and people.

  • Strong understanding of:

  • R&D tax credits

  • SME scheme

  • RDEC

  • Relevant UK tax legislation

  • Excellent:

  • Analytical skills

  • Project management skills

  • Communication skills

  • Ability to explain complex tax concepts in a clear and practical way

  • Strong leadership capability with a collaborative approach

  • Sound judgement and the confidence to manage technical risk
