About the Role

Criminal Investigation Officer

HMRC Fraud Investigation Service (FIS)

HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service (FIS) plays a vital role in protecting the public purse by providing a strong and effective investigation function to support the Department’s compliance and enforcement activity.

We are looking for motivated and professional individuals to join us as Criminal Investigation Officers. This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity for someone who can work within clear rules and procedures, take responsibility for their decisions, and communicate with confidence in a range of high-pressure situations.

About the Role

As a Criminal Investigation Officer, you will contribute to criminal and financial investigations, helping to gather, assess, and present evidence in a clear and structured way. You will be trusted to follow established guidance while using sound judgement and personal initiative in fast-moving situations.

The role is varied and dynamic, offering the opportunity to work on a wide range of investigative activities. You may be required to support or take part in operational activity such as search warrants, arrests, and interviews under caution. You will also be expected to prepare case material for legal proceedings and may, at times, be called upon to give evidence in court.

Because of the operational nature of the post, there may be a requirement for travel, overnight stays, and occasional attendance at court outside normal working hours.

Key Responsibilities

Working as part of a collaborative team, your responsibilities may include:

  • Conducting criminal and financial investigations with support and guidance from managers and experienced colleagues.

  • Gathering and analysing evidence from a range of sources to develop accurate intelligence and evidential material.

  • Building case files and preparing reports for use in legal proceedings.

  • Presenting findings clearly and professionally to senior officers and external partners.

  • Taking part in operational activity, including arrests, searches, and interviews under caution.

  • Working closely with internal and external stakeholders, such as:

  • HMRC teams

  • Police forces

  • Border Force

  • National Crime Agency

  • Solicitors

  • Crown Prosecutors

  • Other government departments

  • Handling sensitive information appropriately, ensuring it is identified, classified, and managed in line with legal and procedural requirements.

  • Maintaining accurate investigative records and ensuring all actions are compliant with legislation, policy, and operational guidance.

  • Responding flexibly to changing priorities and operational demands while contributing effectively as part of a team.

What You’ll Bring

To succeed in this role, you will need to demonstrate professionalism, resilience, and the ability to operate effectively in a structured investigative environment.

You should be able to:

  • Communicate clearly and confidently, both verbally and in writing.

  • Explain your reasoning and decisions in a logical and evidence-based way.

  • Work within established rules and procedures while remaining accountable for your actions.

  • Think quickly and use initiative when responding to evolving situations.

  • Analyse information carefully and draw sound conclusions from multiple sources.

  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues and a wide range of partner organisations.

  • Adapt to changing operational demands and work flexibly when required.

Why Join HMRC FIS?

This role offers the opportunity to be part of a highly important area of HMRC, where your work will directly support the investigation of criminal and financial offences. No two days are the same, and you will gain valuable experience in investigation, evidence handling, operational activity, and legal process.

If you are looking for a career that combines challenge, responsibility, teamwork, and public impact, this could be the ideal next step.
