About the Role

Innovation Reliefs Manager

RSM UK

Shape the future of innovation-led businesses with one of the world’s leading audit, tax, and consulting networks.

At RSM UK, we help middle-market businesses unlock potential, overcome challenges, and achieve ambitious growth. As a fast-growing firm with a clear global vision, we are committed to becoming the premium adviser to the middle market. That ambition influences everything we do — from the way we support clients to the opportunities we create for our people.

If you are looking for a role where you can build a meaningful career, work with impressive clients, and make a genuine impact, this could be the opportunity for you.

The Opportunity

We are looking for an Innovation Reliefs Manager to join our expanding National Innovation & Capital Tax Reliefs Team.

This specialist team supports a broad portfolio of clients — from ambitious start-ups to global multinational organisations — in preparing and submitting Research & Development (R&D) tax relief claims. Our client base spans a wide variety of sectors, particularly:

  • Manufacturing

  • Engineering

  • Life Sciences

  • Software

  • Digital Technologies

With a diverse range of projects and a high-calibre client portfolio, this role offers the chance to deepen your technical expertise, broaden your commercial exposure, and continue developing in a dynamic and growing area of tax.

How You’ll Make an Impact

As an Innovation Reliefs Manager, you will play a central role in delivering high-quality client work, developing relationships, and contributing to the continued growth of the team.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and developing claim methodologies for R&D tax relief submissions to HMRC.

  • Managing the end-to-end preparation of R&D tax relief claims.

  • Leading discussions and interviews with clients’ technical and finance teams to identify qualifying R&D activity and expenditure.

  • Providing expert advice on R&D tax relief legislation and its practical application.

  • Drafting clear, compelling technical narratives describing client projects for inclusion in claim reports.

  • Taking ownership of client relationships, acting as a key day-to-day contact both verbally and in writing.

  • Managing portfolio workflow and billing, while ensuring work is delivered efficiently and to a high standard.

  • Delegating work to junior team members and monitoring progress across assignments.

  • Reviewing technical reports and financial analyses prepared by junior colleagues, offering constructive feedback and coaching.

  • Handling client queries and identifying wider opportunities where RSM can add value.

  • Managing and responding to HMRC enquiries relating to submitted claims.

  • Supporting business development activity, including identifying opportunities and pitching for work with new and existing clients.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking a professional who combines strong technical capability with excellent communication and client management skills.

To succeed in this role, you should bring:

  • ATT / CTA / ACA / ACCA qualification, or equivalent knowledge and practical experience.

  • Strong technical knowledge of the UK R&D tax incentives regime.

  • Proven experience preparing claims under both the SME and RDEC schemes.

  • A solid understanding of the tax and accounting principles relevant to R&D tax relief claims.

  • Sector experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Manufacturing

  • Engineering

  • Life Sciences

  • Software

  • Digital Technologies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong report-writing ability.

  • Experience developing claim methodologies and managing multiple client projects simultaneously.

  • Strong analytical and technical skills, with the ability to produce high-quality financial and technical analysis.

  • Experience responding to HMRC enquiries would be an advantage.
