The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Indirect Tax Manager to join our European Home Office in Watford, UK on an 18-month fixed-term contract. In this role, you will lead a team of 4 associates and take ownership of VAT compliance and reporting across multiple European jurisdictions.

This is an excellent opportunity for a tax professional who enjoys combining strong technical expertise with team leadership, process improvement, cross-functional collaboration, and strategic project support.


What You’ll Be Responsible For

VAT Compliance & Reporting

  • Overseeing the preparation and review of:

  • VAT returns

  • ESLs

  • Intrastats

  • Managing compliance for European VAT-registered entities across:

  • UK

  • Ireland

  • Germany

  • Poland

  • Austria

  • The Netherlands

  • Spain

  • Supporting compliance for any new entities established in future European markets

  • Ensuring all filings are:

  • Accurate

  • Completed on time

  • Accompanied by the correct payments where required

Team Leadership

  • Leading and developing a team of 4 associates

  • Providing clear direction, support, and coaching on day-to-day responsibilities

  • Creating opportunities to empower team members and encourage growth

  • Conducting meaningful performance and development conversations

  • Supporting the team through challenges in a fast-paced environment

Controls, Processes & Governance

  • Ensuring all VAT balance sheet accounts are fully reconciled as part of the VAT return process

  • Documenting, reviewing, and monitoring VAT processes and controls

  • Updating procedures where needed and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement

  • Ensuring SOX controls are properly implemented, documented, and approved

  • Making sure VAT return processes are robust enough to support SAO sign-off requirements in the UK

Tax Authorities & Audit Management

  • Taking the lead in developing and maintaining strong relationships with tax authorities

  • Managing VAT audits efficiently and ensuring timely, effective resolution

  • Responding to related tax authority queries with professionalism and accuracy

Systems, Data & Improvement Initiatives

  • Identifying IT and data solutions required to meet VAT reporting obligations

  • Partnering with IT teams on requirements, implementation, and process enhancements

  • Supporting broader system updates and developments that impact indirect tax reporting

  • Reviewing VAT rates applied to products across systems to ensure they remain accurate and up to date

Business Partnering & Projects

  • Building strong, collaborative relationships with stakeholders across the TJX organisation

  • Supporting ad hoc tax queries and helping the business navigate change

  • Partnering with the AVP of Indirect Tax on project work, including:

  • Expansion activity

  • Systems development

  • Process changes

  • Proactively identifying opportunities to improve TJX Europe’s overall VAT position and cash flow

Specialist Support

  • Keeping up to date with relevant VAT technical developments and case law

  • Handling CIS, RCT, and legal queries relating to construction work on stores in the UK and Ireland


What We’re Looking For

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Preferably CTA qualified or equivalent, though this is not essential

  • Experience gained within a reputable accounting firm or multinational organisation

  • Demonstrated people management experience within a fast-moving environment

  • Strong European indirect tax technical knowledge

  • Excellent project management capability

  • Strong IT skills, particularly in Excel

  • Working knowledge of Oracle would be beneficial, but is not essential

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

  • Proven ability to build authentic and effective relationships with colleagues at all levels

  • Retail sector experience is advantageous, though not required
