Macmillan Publishers International Ltd is looking for a Tax Accountant (Direct Taxes) to join our UK tax team and play a key role in delivering high-quality direct tax compliance, reporting, and advisory support across the business.
This is an exciting opportunity for a technically strong tax professional to become a trusted specialist within a collaborative three-person UK tax team, working closely with the Senior Tax Director and supporting tax matters across 14 entities.
The role is ideal for a Corporate Tax or Mixed Tax professional, whether currently working in-house or in practice, who is looking to broaden their expertise and gain deeper exposure to international tax matters within a respected global publishing business.
About the Role
As Tax Accountant (Direct Taxes), you will help safeguard the accuracy, effectiveness, and integrity of Macmillan’s direct tax processes. You will contribute across compliance, reporting, advisory, and strategic tax activity, while building strong partnerships with finance and business stakeholders in the UK and internationally.
Key Responsibilities
Direct Tax Compliance & Reporting
Manage corporate tax compliance across the group
Prepare and oversee:
Corporate tax returns
Year-end and quarterly tax provisions
Deferred tax calculations
Corporate Interest Restriction (CIR) reporting
Controlled Foreign Company (CFC) reporting
Country-by-Country Reporting (CbCR)
Pillar II requirements
Transfer Pricing
Lead on transfer pricing compliance and reporting
Support the preparation of Local File documentation
Liaise with German headquarters on transfer pricing matters and requirements
Tax Advisory Support
Provide practical internal guidance on:
Employment taxes
PAYE / NI
PSA
STBV
Withholding taxes
Stamp taxes
Translate technical tax issues into clear, commercial advice for internal stakeholders
Risk & Governance
Maintain and update SAO risk and control matrices
Manage and respond to HMRC correspondence and enquiries
Support the business in maintaining robust tax governance procedures
Strategic Tax Support
Contribute to broader tax planning activity, including:
Capital structure
Loss utilisation
Assist with international transaction assignments
Support the development of tax-efficient, commercially sound approaches across the group
Stakeholder Collaboration
Build effective working relationships with:
UK Shared Services
Finance Directors
HR
Legal
Tax colleagues in Germany and the US
About You
You are a qualified and detail-oriented tax professional who combines strong technical knowledge with excellent organisation, communication, and analytical ability. You are comfortable working across a broad range of direct tax issues and can confidently turn complex tax matters into practical actions.
Qualifications
Qualified Accountant (ACA / ACCA) or
Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA)
Experience
At least 3 years’ experience in professional services
At least 2 years’ in-house experience

Strong knowledge of UK corporate tax
Good understanding of:
Group relief
Corporate Interest Restriction (CIR)
Experience completing and submitting:
Corporate tax returns
Tax compliance procedures
Responses to HMRC enquiries
Ability to provide tax guidance to commercial departments
Good knowledge of:
Employment taxes
PAYE / NI
CEST / IR35
PSA
Benefits taxation
Strong data manipulation and tax technology capability
Excellent project management skills
A highly organised approach with exceptional attention to detail
Confidence presenting technical research in a clear, practical, and actionable way
Desirable Knowledge
Exposure to international tax, including:
Transfer pricing
Withholding taxes
Double Tax Treaties
CFC
CbCR
Pillar II
Awareness of VAT
