About the Role
This is a highly technical and strategic opportunity suited to someone with deep tax knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
You will be responsible for shaping and driving HMRC’s compliance strategy for your allocated portfolio, ensuring risks are identified early, addressed appropriately, and handled with consistency, professionalism, and technical accuracy.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
Lead HMRC’s compliance strategy for a portfolio of wealthy individuals considered high risk.
Develop strong working relationships with customers and their agents to encourage good compliance and resolve identified risks.
Carry out annual risk assessments and build a detailed understanding of each customer’s tax affairs.
Identify and address complex tax risks across personal tax regimes, with a particular focus on Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax.
Lead investigations into suspected non-compliance, using the appropriate legal powers and technical tools where necessary.
Communicate HMRC’s technical position clearly and confidently, both in writing and in verbal discussions.
Work collaboratively across HMRC, including with teams such as Risk & Intelligence Service and Fraud Investigation Service.
Prepare high-quality submissions for technical specialists, policy professionals, and legal teams.
Support upstream compliance activity and contribute to projects designed to help close the Wealthy tax gap.
Take an active role in internal networks and subject forums, sharing expertise and promoting consistency across WMBC.
Provide technical guidance and strategic oversight on compliance activity, without direct line management responsibility.
What You’ll Bring
To succeed in this role, you will need to combine technical tax expertise with strong judgement, confidence, and a collaborative approach.
- Extensive knowledge of personal tax compliance and the risks affecting wealthy individuals.
- Strong technical capability across complex tax matters, especially Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical matters clearly and persuasively.
- Strong relationship-building ability when working with customers, agents, and internal stakeholders.
- Sound investigative and analytical skills to assess risk and respond effectively to suspected non-compliance.

- Strategic awareness to contribute to wider compliance objectives and long-term tax gap reduction.
Why This Role Matters
This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to one of HMRC’s key compliance priorities. By overseeing complex cases involving wealthy individuals, you will help ensure the tax system is applied fairly, consistently, and effectively.
Your work will directly support HMRC’s wider mission to reduce non-compliance, strengthen public trust, and close the tax gap through both casework leadership and broader strategic input.
Additional Information
This role provides strategic leadership and oversight in compliance activity, although it does not include direct line management responsibilities.
It is ideal for a technically strong professional who is confident operating in a complex environment, influencing stakeholders, and making informed decisions on sensitive and high-profile tax matters.
