About the Role
OMB Tax Director
Azets | Shropshire, North Wales & North West
Azets is seeking an accomplished OMB Tax Director to provide strategic leadership across a diverse client portfolio, delivering expert tax advice, ensuring compliance with UK tax regulations, and supporting the continued growth of the firm across Shropshire, North Wales, and into the North West.
This is a senior leadership opportunity for a commercially minded tax professional who combines technical excellence with strong relationship management, team leadership, and business development capability.
About the Opportunity
As OMB Tax Director, you will lead on complex tax matters for owner-managed business clients, guiding them through compliance, planning, and strategic decision-making. You will play a central role in strengthening client relationships, driving service excellence, identifying growth opportunities, and enhancing Azets’ reputation in the regional market.
You will also act as a mentor and leader within the team, supporting senior colleagues, encouraging high performance, and helping shape the future direction of the tax offering.
Key Responsibilities
Client Leadership & Relationship Management
Lead and grow relationships across a portfolio of Azets clients
Build and strengthen connections with key strategic clients
Identify client needs both now and in the future, offering solutions that add long-term value
Deliver outstanding service and maintain high levels of client satisfaction, measured against relevant KPIs
Lead cross-service line delivery for multi-office client portfolios
Influence clients strategically using a variety of approaches to support successful outcomes
Make decisions with a focus on long-term relationship value
Strategic Tax Advice & Technical Expertise
Act as a recognised technical expert in tax
Oversee tax assignments, including complex and large-scale engagements, with limited partner support
Provide strategic tax planning advice while ensuring full compliance with UK tax regulations
Anticipate tax risks and issues early, taking timely and effective action
Work seamlessly with tax specialists and colleagues across other service lines to deliver a joined-up client experience
Maintain a broad understanding of technical areas outside your immediate specialism and identify opportunities for cross-referral
Stay ahead of regulatory, legislative, and market developments across tax and the wider firm
Quality, Risk & Operational Excellence
Ensure the team consistently delivers accurate, high-quality work
Promote standards that go beyond minimum compliance expectations
Track, review, and act on quality issues
Support and contribute to the development of Azets’ quality monitoring processes
Encourage continuous improvement and the elimination of errors
Support appropriate training, resource planning, talent planning, and software planning to meet current and future technical demands
Promote quality controls across the tax department at a regional level
Team Leadership & People Development
Lead with clarity, integrity, and professionalism
Create a positive, collaborative environment that supports wellbeing and team morale

Empower others through effective delegation and clear communication
Support the development and career progression of the wider team
Work with managers to identify and develop high performers
Support managers in addressing underperformance and inefficiencies where needed
Assist tax partners with recruitment, team growth, and resource forecasting
Mentor senior team members and contribute to the development of future leaders
Business Development & Growth
Expand and strengthen your internal and external network
Generate new work for your team and for Azets more broadly
Grow and develop your client portfolio, with clear evidence of fee growth and successful service expansion
Identify opportunities to introduce new services to existing clients
Evaluate the effectiveness of business development activity and refine approaches where needed
Clearly articulate the value proposition of Azets’ tax services
Prepare and present tax tender documents, demonstrating clear client advantages
Support local offices in developing and implementing client tax strategies
Use influence effectively, including bringing in technical specialists to support opportunities and add credibility
Innovation, Efficiency & Decision-Making
Lead digital transformation initiatives and embed new approaches within your team
Use market trends, organisational data, and commercial insight to identify efficiencies and improvement opportunities
Balance conflicting priorities effectively and make sound, flexible decisions using live data
Present clear decision options to stakeholders, outlining risks and benefits
Review and adapt previous decisions where performance data indicates a change is needed
Ensure time is used effectively, including keeping meetings focused with clear outcomes

Promote joined-up working across service lines to enhance the client experience
Help shape the future capability of the department through training, planning, and talent retention
Qualifications
Accountancy and/or tax qualification required, or qualified by experience

Proven experience developing the required technical and leadership capabilities through:
